THE CACHUELA PARROTS CLAY LICK

The parrot clay lick in Puerto Maldonado is a clay wall beside the river where multiple species of parrots come every morning to supplement their diet with the minerals found here.

This generates a natural spectacle of sounds and colors that bird lovers and nature enthusiasts will not want to miss.

To get here you just have to get on one of our boats and sail the Madre de Dios River for less than 10 minutes from the Cachuela Center, the collpa is seen from the same boat

Start of the natural show

Parrot collpa activity typically begins shortly before dawn, when the first parrots approach the collpa area, usually in pairs as they call, and then land on the trees around the lick. It is understood that they perch on the higher branches while waiting for the rest of parrots to check if there are predators in the area.

Little by little, the trees are filled with more and more parrots. After a while, they start to fly slowly in circles in front of the lick or descend to some area of ​​vegetation that is lower and once they feel sure that there are no predators, they congregate in groups in the lick to consume the clay .

Once they have finished, or if they perceive any threat, they will vanish with a rainbow of colors and a cacophony of calls.

To avoid disturbing the parrots

Some measures are taken and recommended to avoid disturbing the parrots. First of all, keep in mind that visitors are taken to the colpas before the parrots arrive, which means a good early bird!

In addition, your guide will ask your group to stay together in a certain area that will be at a considerable distance from the clay lick itself (for example, for Collpa Cachuela, this distance has been set at least 150 m) and stay relatively quiet.
